Seattle-based company Alpacifica and Lima-based Natybel recently formed a new venture in Peru to further expand their production capacities and product lines. The new company, Natur.pe was accepted as part of WEConnect International, which will connect the women-run cooperative with corporate members worldwide. As its website states, WEConnect is “a corporate led non-profit, facilitates inclusive, sustainable economic growth by empowering and connecting women business owners globally”. The new products under the Natur.pe umbrella will be brokered in the United States by Full Circle Exchange.

Meg McFarland and Jan McFarland will be representing Natur.pe at the Women’s Business Enterprise National Council conference in Orlando in June, where they will participate in corporate “match-making”. “It is our hope that we can meet the needs of more companies by providing them with clothing and accessories made from alpaca and Pima cotton. Our company is different because we are a cooperative run by women. We provide training and skills so women can better their situations here in Peru. We are really excited to see what the future holds for all women business owners.”, said Norma Velásquez, owner and manger of Natybel.eirl/Natur.pe.

Seeing the great need to help shelter dogs, Alpacks® recently made a donation to Seattle-based Ginger’s Pet Rescue. The sweaters will be worn by the rescued dogs during the cold winter months in the Seattle area. Ginger has asked Alpacks® to help spread the word about the upcoming need for fostering or adopting a dog to save it from death row.

If you have never heard of Ginger’s Pet Rescue, here is a brief biography of the founder: “Owner of the Rickshaw Restaurant in North Seattle, Ginger Luke became involved in canine rescue quite by accident in 2006. And two years later, Ginger’s Pet Rescue has found homes for more than 1,200 dogs, many of which have come off Death Row in shelters ranging from Washington state to Northern California.”

Please visit http://www.gingerspetrescue.org for more details.

If you have a short-haired dog, he or she might feel the itch of a sheep’s wool sweater. Here are some reasons why many people (and dogs) prefer alpaca fiber over sheep’s wool.

Alpaca fleece is lightweight, soft, and durable. While similar to sheep’s wool, it is warmer, does not feel rough on the skin, and has no lanolin, which makes it hypoallergenic. Alpaca fiber is also water resistant. There are two types of alpacas: Huacaya and Suri. The Huancaya fiber is soft and crimped, much similar to sheep’s wool. The Suri’s coat is described as being “mop-like” because of its long, thin locks.

Finally, alpaca fiber comes in many different natural tones, so often times it isn’t necessary to use harsh dyes or chemicals.
